6. (C) Strengthen Step 1: Identify the Question Type
The question asks for something that “provides the most support” for the author’s argument, making this a Strengthen question.
Step 2: Untangle the Stimulus
The author concludes ([t]his suggests) that the still waters around Shooter’s Island are a nursery for young waterbirds. The evidence is that, despite having a similar overall waterbird population to other nearby islands, Shooter’s Island has a lot more juveniles.
Step 3: Make a Prediction
The evidence merely cites population data, but is a high population of juveniles enough to claim that Shooter’s Island serves as a nursery? The author assumes so, despite a lack of evidence about nurseries. To strengthen the argument, the correct answer must provide some evidence that the waters around Shooter’s Island do, in fact, serve as a nursery.
Step 4: Evaluate the Answer Choices
(C) is correct. The waters around Shooter’s Island are said to be exceptionally still. And if still waters are sought out as nurseries for juveniles, then that provides direct support for the author’s conclusion.
(A) is irrelevant. It doesn’t matter how long the shipwrecks have been in the area or how long the waters were still. There is still no evidence that the presence of many juveniles is indicative of a nursery.
(B) is irrelevant. Whether or not the population fluctuates at any of the islands in the area, this does nothing to confirm whether Shooter’s Island is used as a nursery or not.
(D) is irrelevant. This makes the water around Shooter’s Island unique in its stillness. However, there’s still no evidence that this makes those waters a nursery.
(E) is a 180. The population around Shooter’s Island is similar to the population around each of the other islands. If the population around nurseries is usually much greater, then Shooter’s Island is likely not a nursery.
